Acceptance and Commitment Therapy – Shamash Alidina

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or Training  (ACT) is designed to help you live a rich, full and meaningful life. The approach is highly evidence-based, with early studies going back 40 years. ACT is particularly well suited for our currently global challenge, as it often states ‘we hurt where we care’. And the hurt many of us are experiencing is because we do care about health, connection and our way of living. In this talk and workshop, I’ll offer an introduction to ACT, how it was developed, and why increasing psychological flexibility, the main aim of ACT, is arguably the most well-researched measure of resilience and wellbeing in all of psychology. You’ll discover the six core flexibility skills, the evidence-base of ACT and how to develop those six skills to be clearer about your values and take action on them, using mindfulness, compassion, acceptance, and even tuning into your transcendent self, to flourish and stay psychologically flexible in these challenging times. Shamash is one of the UK’s leading professional mindfulness teachers. He is the international bestselling author of Mindfulness For Dummies and The Mindful Way through Stress. He is the co-founder the world’s first Museum of Happiness in London, and more recently, Shamash has been training practitioners in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

An Introduction to Compassion Focused Therapy – Dr Chris Irons, PhD

What is compassion? How is it beneficial for people? And how can it be harnessed directly as part of therapy?  In this talk, we’ll take a look at some of the key theories underneath and practices of CFT, and see how this can be a powerful way of working with distress and suffering.
This presentation will help you learn some of the key basics of CFT, and have an opportunity to try out a few CFT interventions and see how these may be useful. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a better sense of what CFT is, how it can be helpful, and hopefully energise you to find out more about CFT in the future!

Post Traumatic Growth (after COVID-19) – Dr Sousan Abadian

For many, facing the existential threat of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic has been a shared traumatic experience – a kind of collective trauma. What exactly is collective trauma, what are the different kinds, and what effects do they have on us? How can they impact our beliefs and narratives, and how do posttraumatic narratives and beliefs perpetuate collective trauma going forward? How might we instead be able to utilize this period as a time of emotional and social enrichment, even while we may be experiencing anger and grief?

Synthesizing both academic research on trauma and lessons from indigenous teachers, Sousan will be sharing a concrete framework for developing capacities that will not only allow us to heal but create new potentialities for ourselves and our communities going forward. — Dr. Sousan Abadian earned a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard University, an M.P.A. in International Development from Harvard’s Kennedy School, and an M.A. in the Anthropology of Social Change and Development, also from Harvard University. Her earlier research on healing the effects of long-standing collective trauma and cultural damage, a key contributing factor in violence and impoverishment, was described by Nobel laureate in economics Amartya Sen as “pioneering” and “highly original.” She now has an independent practice teaching, speaking, and consulting internationally on leadership, innovation, culture change, and her A.R.I.A. principles.

Healing Collective Trauma – Thomas Hübl

When someone experiences a threat to their life – be it physical, emotional or psychological, this threat has already been perceived by that person at an emotional level. The problem we have with ptsd and complex ptsd is that no amount of logical reasoning can deal with emotional trauma. This is why ptsd is so difficult to treat, everyone wants to use logic. Secondly, we are all interconnected. Has anyone bothered to look into morphic resonance? A fear over here can resonate with fear over there. Quantum physics is pointing to this connection between all beings, whether particles, crystals, the 100th monkey syndrome, etc. Prof Rupert Sheldrake has lectured on morphic resonance and morphogenetic fields. Some people can experience the same traumatic events but have different responses. See Victor Frankl, a survivor of the concentration camps, and his book, Man’s Search for Meaning. Without hope and faith you can let the traumatic event ruin your life and even hasten your own death.

The Psychology of Humor – How humor functions in a complex and changing world

Today’s topic is all about humor/comedy. Humor is a universal human experience. We love to laugh. We invest a lot of our time, energy and money into creating laughter. People often know funny when they see it, but have a difficult time describing it. If we ask the average person: What is funny? We’re likely to get a blank stare. Moreover, we typically don’t explore such questions as, Why do we laugh? What effects does it have for ourselves and society as a whole? What are the different types and functions of humor? And most importantly, how can we best harness this power to improve our world? We answer these and moire questions with today’s guest: Dr. Thomas E Ford. Tom Ford is a Professor of Psychology at Western Carolina University. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of HUMOR: the International Journal of Humor Research. He and his colleagues have developed the Prejudiced Norm Theory, an influential theory on the impact of disparaging humor on prejudice and discrimination. He is co-author of The Psychology of Humor: An Integrative Approach, and co-editor of his newest book, just out, The Social Psychology of Humor, among many other related articles. We start off with defining humor – what it is and we we laugh.

Johann Hari – Depression: The Real Causes (& Unexpected Solutions)

What really causes depression and anxiety – and how can we really solve them? In this talk, award winning journalist Johann Hari will discuss his recent 40,000-mile journey across the world, where he interviewed social scientists uncovering evidence that depression and anxiety are not caused by a chemical imbalance in our brains – but rather, are largely caused by key problems with the way we live today. Hari’s journey took him from an Amish community in Indiana, to a mind-blowing series of experiments in Baltimore, to an uprising in Berlin.

Along the way, he uncovered nine real causes of depression and anxiety, which eventually led him to the scientists who are discovering seven very different solutions – ones that work. Johann Hari is a New York Times best-selling author. His book ‘Chasing the Scream’ has been translated into 15 languages and is currently being adapted into a major Hollywood film, and into a non-fiction documentary series. With over 20 million views, he is one of the most-watched TED speakers of all time. He has written for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian, and was twice named ‘National Newspaper Journalist of the Year’ by Amnesty International.

18 юли 2021 годинаMental Health: Conversations With Prof. Sheldon Solomon Episodes 1 and 2

Why is the world in the mess that it’s in? Sheldon Solomon has been asking that question in one form or another for his entire adult life. He got together with some of his colleagues to share conversations about the state our society finds itself in: growing mental health issues, gross economic inequality, the threat of climate change, bigotry, and seemingly endless war. They draw on some of their own empirical research and many ideas from the great thinkers and writers past and present. Many of their ideas are rooted in the theories of Ernest Becker, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Denial of Death. The first episode in the series addresses the rampant mental health issues.

11 юли 2021 – The Origins of Consciousness with Dr. Mark Solms

Dr. Mark Solms is one of the leading neuroscientists in the world, best known for his contributions into the mechanisms of dreaming, and his use of psychoanalytic methods in modern neuroscience. His new book The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness offers a comprehensive understanding of why we feel a subjective sense of self and how it arises in the brain. Here we discuss the dawn of consciousness, the essential role of feelings and emotions and where they come from, the role of the cortex to make predictions in an uncertain world, and how that relates to our complex behavior. We’ll discuss the basic drives of all organisms, and how these drives relate to the development of the brain and central nervous system. We’ll get into the elementary physics of the Free Energy Principle, entropy, and homeostasis and how this all relates back to why we behave as we do. We’ll get into the discussion of voluntary behavior, free will and choice and how to properly conceptualize what these terms represent. We’ll talk briefly about the origins of self, the relationship of all living things, his thoughts on the possibility of constructing an artificial mind, and much more.

Ernest Becker (September 27, 1924 – March 6, 1974) was an American cultural anthropologist and interdisciplinary thinker and writer. He wrote several books on human motivation and behavior, most notably the 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning work, The Denial of Death. In it, he argues that “the basic motivation for human behavior is our biological need to control our basic anxiety, to deny the terror of death.” (Keen 1973). Becker suggested that a significant function of culture is to provide successful ways to engage in death denial.

The role of death in life, and our search for meaningSheldon Solomon. A Liminal Space – Video – EPISODE #15 (Работен език: английски), 84 мин.

За гост-лектора ни днес: Sheldon Solomon is an experimental social psychologist at Skidmore College in the United States. He is the co-developer of “Terror Management Theory”, and co-author of the book “The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life”, and he has been featured in several films (Flight from Death), television documentaries and radio interviews. Sheldon’s life work is based on the concept that our knowledge and fear of death is at the core of the human experience and condition, and the hidden motive behind almost everything that we do, how we see the world, and the decisions that we make. Sheldon’s work is of critical importance in attempting to understand what it means to be human, and why we do what we do, and is deeply rooted in compassion, peace and love.
